Shaaibu Yakubu Abdullahi, a 40-year-old deaf teacher was arrested, last week, by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly raping a 6-month-old baby in the Potiskum area of Yobe state.
The commandant of NSCDC, Muhammad Gidado Fari, revealed that the deaf teacher allegedly connived with his 10-year-old student, who carried the baby to him from her neighbour’s house and he defiled her.
Yari said Abdullahi was arrested after an NGO, National Council of Women Society (NCWS), reported the situation to the corps, adding that the matter has been reported to the state’s Ministry of Justice for prosecution as the case needs a professional in sign language to interpret.
The President of NCWS, Halima Kyari Joda, said the baby was taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for examination and proper treatment. The new twist now is that the teacher was released the following day and this is currently causing outrage on Twitter.
