Unlicensed Nigerian motorist who caused the death of pedestrian, bags 43 months in UK jail

Adebowale Adeyemi, 38, was driving a silver Vauxhall Meriva, on February, 1, 2015, when he collided with a central traffic island which caused a woman, Cissy Howlett, 54, to react and fall in to the path of another vehicle which hit her. She died a short while later at an east London hospital.

Adeyemi, who did not stop, was arrested 3 days later and charged. He was sentenced on Monday, 6 June, 2016, to 3 years and 7 months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving; causing death whilst not driving a vehicle in accordance with a licence; and causing death whilst driving uninsured.

Detective Constable Alan Curtis said: "This is an extremely tragic case. Cissy and her husband were on a night out when the actions of Adeyemi caused her death. He should not have been driving that night; he was a provisional licence holder and was not being supervised. In addition to this, his vision was severely impaired and he later failed an eyesight test to meet the minimum standard for driving."
